Craft, Comfort, and Conscious Luxury

Sandriver Brand story

Sandriver, the Shanghai-based cashmere producer, finds its origins deeply rooted in the vast and magnificent prairies of Inner Mongolia, extending to the "Roof of the World" in Tibet.

Inner Mongolia, with its unique natural resources, is home to Sandriver Cashmere and its founder, Juliet Guo. With 35 years of cashmere experience, Guo is deeply committed to the sustainable development of cashmere production. She spent 20 years meticulously building her own industry supply chain to ensure the top quality of cashmere fibers and safeguard the livelihood of her community's herdsmen. Having studied in Germany, Guo has modernized cashmere production with a sustainable approach. Sandriver stands as the first international cashmere brand from China that guarantees the totality of bespoke and ethical cashmere production.

"Sandriver strives to be the epitome of a socially responsible cashmere producer through our humane operation of Sandriver’s family pasture in Alxa League, Inner Mongolia; our care for preserving the environment and tradition throughout the production; and our determination in harmonizing craft and technology at our Research & Development Centre in Shanghai," says Juliet Guo.

More About Sandriver

Sands of Desires, Rivers of Livelihood

Home of Sandriver and History of Cashmere Felt

The Alxa League, or Alashan League, is a shining pearl in Inner Mongolia, Northwest China. Its inhabitants, including Juliet Guo’s family and her ancestors, have been blessed with unique natural resources and heritage – the most precious Alxa cashmere goats and a brilliant ethnic culture. During the spring molting season, as the weather warms, local Alashan herders use special coarse combs to gently separate the cashmere fibers from the goats ’ coats or fleece; this step causes no pain or discomfort to the herd.

For the ancient nomads of Inner Mongolia, the felt-making process was an  expression of common effort and a benediction among participating families. Today, Sandriver shares these traditions and techniques through collaborations with designers and artists, creating unique pieces for fashion and home. The brand also hosts regular workshops, inviting patrons to experience the joy of kneading, rubbing, and shaping in the felting process.

Quality of Sandriver’s Cashmere Fibers

The underdown of Alxa goats boasts a unique and exceptional quality; it's longer and finer than that of any other cashmere goat. Sandriver’s family pasture exclusively breeds purebred Alxa goats to support the preservation of this full-blooded breed and to guarantee the true and pure luxury of its genuine cashmere products. Sandriver has successfully established direct and long- term supply relations with 30 herding families, each owning about 100 goats on their grasslands.

Sandriver exclusively uses cashmere with a length of 36-plus mm and a fineness of 14-15 microns. The superior quality of this cashmere allows it to be woven into the famed "200-count" scarves, meaning only one gram of cashmere is spun into 200 meters of yarn.

Sustainable Approach

Sandriver's products are continually innovating and evolving, blending tradition with modernity. The brand pays attention to animal welfare, the development of local herding families, and the empowerment of women, demonstrating a deep commitment to practicing and promoting a sustainable lifestyle.

In 2012, Juliet Guo established the 'Sandriver Foundation', a dedicated education fund aimed at enhancing the learning environment and conditions for pastoral children. Annual funding is provided to the community. The foundation also seeks to rebuild the relationship between culture and nature by investing heavily in the Alxa Grassland as a global cashmere base and provider of the pure Alxa goat breed, working diligently to protect this exceptional breed.

Guo holds over 200 personal patents and is considered a pioneer in innovative textile technology. Under her leadership, Sandriver’s Research & Development Centre, located in Shanghai's Jinshan District, hosts a team of experienced craftsmen and textile experts. To maintain cashmere’s flexible characteristics, Sandriver utilizes 'natural' cashmere colors derived from grasses and insects found on the Inner Mongolian prairies. When auxiliary materials and additives are necessary, only high- grade, green dyeing auxiliaries from Germany are applied.

The aid project "Ten-Year Revival Plan for Pulu" exemplifies Sandriver's core brand values of "respecting traditional craftsmanship and artisan spirit" and serves as a promise of its continued commitment to these principles.
